Artes Vitae

True life skills -- the ones that carry you through -- go far beyond a test score.

If you have been reading news about education, child development, human success, or education in the last several years, you have certainly come across the term Executive Functions.

Coming out of the field of neuroscience, the Executive Functions are the higher level brain operations that help us meet deadlines, respond to change, collaborate, plan ahead, and many other essential life skills.

In short, they are the skills that help carry you through the many different situations you encounter as you grow up and go through life.
Nobody will deny the importance of being able to write clearly, handle numbers easily, and have a working knowledge of global history and geography.

But a true education also prepares a child for the world. This is why we have chosen Artes Vitae as one of the school's mottos, because we believe in the development of the whole person.

The more we learn about children, the more we understand that nobody is born with these skills. Everybody needs to learn them, and that learning starts here, with you and with us.

For more details on the Executive Functions and their role in a Montessori classroom, read the linked article at the bottom of the news.

And, as always, thank you for reading.

Kitchen News
Sign up for our legendary Thanksgiving feast on November 22! Order lunches at Boonli.com.

The
deadline for next week's lunches - and the month of November -  is midnight tonight.

Chew on this:
  • Helping prepare meals connects you to your child's nutrition and your community at the same time
  • You can see the impact your volunteer hours have right before your very eyes
  • Catch your breath with a complementary meal and enjoy the fruits of your labor

We're serious:
you can ask anyone to volunteer in the kitchen on your behalf -- and it still counts towards your family's hours. Honest Abe.
Community Learning Center

Making It Monthly is trending up as our Circle of Champions continues to expand.
Thank you!

We now have 67 staff members and families choosing to make it monthly by giving regularly to Lewis & Clark Montessori.

Our goal is 50 new or returning Champions by the end of 2017.  You can help us get there by making a donation that matches the tremendous educational and community value your children and your family receive every day.

01 - Explore Art is coming up -- apply for a merchant booth!
Explore Art
Friday, December 8th, 5-8pm

Make sure this enchanted evening of the arts has a firm place on your calendar. Arguably our most popular and well-attended event of the year, we go to great lengths to make sure each one is better than the last.

Come for the marketplace, stay for dinner at one of our three attending food trucks: Wafflepalooza, Kama'Aina Hawaiian food truck, & Nature's Old Time Meats, and wrap it up with a musical performance in the library.

Get involved, contact Mishawn Nelson: mnelson@lcmcs.org
02 - Thank you Runraisers!  Over 145 special event shirts were earned by our students and staff at Runtober 2017.  On Halloween, many of us donned our newly-minted glow-in-the-dark eclipse shirts for a group picture.

Bits & Bobs
Remember those FREE and easy ways you can earn the school money? Our quarterly donation from Fred Meyer this fall was $357.04. Thank you to the 64 households who have linked your Freddie's account to our school and used your buying power to help fund your child's education!

Don't stop there -- point your browser to smile.amazon.com before you shop, and they will send some free money our way, too. Small gestures, BIG results.

Music Class for parents and their toddlers! Learn, laugh, and get lyrical with our music teacher, Kami, from 9:45-10:30 on Tuesdays. Donations gladly accepted to help support music at Lewis & Clark Montessori.
GREAT NONPROFITS
For the third year running, our school is a Top-Rated Nonprofit on Great Nonprofits -- go check it out!

There are some
great stories to read, feel free to add your own (or better yet, polish them up and save them until January and help us earn 2018 rating!), and thank you for being a major part of what makes us great every day.
"Life is a succession of lessons, which must be lived to be understood."

Volunteer!
It separates the lion from the mouse.

Give a little love to some easels. We have a few art easels that were donated that just need some TLC before ExploreArt.

Prepare meals in the kitchen. Choose one or more days to come in for at least two hours between 8am-3pm. Commit for a week, a month, or all year long, it's up to you! Your lunch is on us.

Help us get the word out about Explore Art -- post flyers around town and spread the word to crafty vendors.

Join a committee! We've got a few, take your pick. There's always room for your area of expertise and enthusiasm.

You can donate time or dollars to fulfill your family's annual commitment of 40 volunteer hours. Log your hours on our website or in the office. Direct volunteering questions to Mishawn Nelson: mnelson@lcmcs.org.

These 'control room' tools are not something we are born with; rather, we acquire them with the help of our environment -- and their proper growth is essential to our lives.
