Community: an idea without limits.

Let us be first in line to open our arms and welcome Cindy Guschov back to our school community -- hip, hip, hooray!

We say welcome back because Cindy was one of our first Kinder guides, way back in the days when we didn't have space at one campus for all of our classrooms.

It has been especially fun to see her reunions with longtime staff and her former students who are now all in Upper Elementary.

Cindy, a Montessori Primary- and Elementary-trained guide, is moving back from the Oregon coast to care for the Pacific Room while Marilyn is away. She brings her warm presence and many years in the classroom to the community.

We love having her here so much you will be sure to see her around for the rest of the year, in one capacity or another.
In the spirit of open arms and gratitude, the staff here at Lewis & Clark HQ would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to our brilliant PTO for the delicious and nutritious lunches they prepared for us during conferences.

The way to our hearts is definitely through our stomachs; your care meant a great deal to us on days when most staff worked very long hours with scant time to break fast or breathe.

It is care for our entire community that ties us together. This week, read on at the bottom of the news for strategies and insight into the moments and individuals who need the MOST care from us, but can be the most challenging to serve.

We all need reminders that the loudest cries for help often hurt our ears -- so what can we do instead of cower or cringe?

And, as always, thank you for reading.

Kitchen News
Sign up for our legendary Thanksgiving feast on November 22! Order lunches at Boonli.com.

The
deadline for next week's lunches is midnight tonight.

Remember:
you don't need to order Morning Snack any longer, we have our quantities calibrated at this point. Thank you!

Please contact Leslie (lshalduha@lcmcs.org) or Mishawn (mnelson@lcmcs.org), to ask about the ways you can save Christmas, I mean lunch, by volunteering in the kitchen.
Meriwether Fund: Five new monthly givers joined our Circle of Champions last week, bringing our numbers to 72!

As soon as we reach a total of 110 monthly givers to the Meriwether Fund, we will enter all members of our current Circle of Champions into a special raffle drawing.

Want a chance to win?  Make it monthly!
#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.

Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (and the popular retail events Black Friday and Cyber Monday), #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on holiday and year-end giving.

One of the best ways to get involved is in your own community.

It’s a simple idea. Come together with your community, give back, and share your action with others to encourage them to do the same.

I'm in! What now?
  • Mark your calendar
  • Look at your budget for year-end giving
  • Make a plan: how will you participate?
  • Reach out and encourage others to give to our community, too.

Explore Art
Friday, December 8th, 5-8pm

Make one, earn five! Wreaths for volunteer hours, that is. If your fingers have got the itch and you're still figuring out where you can pitch in, create a lovely seasonal wreath and donate it to ExploreArt for FIVE volunteer hours. Wins all around.
Questions? contact Mishawn Nelson: mnelson@lcmcs.org

Bits & Bobs
MAC Coffeehouse is next Thursday, November 16, at 4pm. Don't miss this arts showcase of MAC creative expressions such as: short films, ukulele, MACapella, mosaics, and paper art!

We are hosting a workshop for The National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector and Montessori Northwest on Friday, December 1st.
We are the largest Montessori school in the state of Oregon, and a growing example in the public Montessori world.
This is a chance for us to show off our stellar food program (by serving lunch to participants) while supporting the growth of public Montessori.

Music Class for parents and their toddlers! Learn, laugh, and get lyrical with our music teacher, Kami, from 9:45-10:30 on Tuesdays. Donations gladly accepted to help support music at Lewis & Clark Montessori.
PTO Corner
Restaurant Night at Chipotle
Tuesday, November 14th, 4-8pm
Join us for a magical night of not cooking: no prep, no dishes, just a great meal served hot!
A whopping
50% of the proceeds will be donated to Lewis & Clark just by heading over to Chipotle at 2065 NE Burnside Rd. in Gresham and mentioning our school with your order! (Or bring the flyer coming home with your own ever-hungry little burrito(s) today). Food! Friends! A delicious way to support our school!

Coffee Hour (or two)
No school on Friday the 10th means no coffee hour as well. But, we will see you on November 17th starting right after drop off at Jazzy Bagels on Powell & Main St. in Gresham. Join us for a fun, casual chat over a cup of joe and delightful bagels (they even have gf). See you then!

PTO Meeting
Sunday, November 19th, 6:30pm
Happy Valley New Seasons community room

Come give your two cents and hear the latest and greatest plans for spoiling the staff and planning community events. Everyone is invited with no commitment to volunteer. We value diversity, we want to hear from everyone! Help us as we strive to live up to our motto: Better Together.
"I cannot teach anybody anything,
I can only make them think."

- Socrates

Volunteer!
Be the miracle.

Make a wreath for the ExploreArt wreath auction! Worth FIVE volunteer hours.

Give a little love to some easels. We have a few art easels that were donated that just need some TLC before ExploreArt.

Prepare meals in the kitchen. Choose one or more days to come in for at least two hours between 8am-3pm. Commit for a week, a month, or all year long, it's up to you! Your lunch is on us.

Help us get the word out about Explore Art -- post flyers around town and spread the word to crafty vendors.

Join a committee! We've got a few, take your pick. There's always room for your area of expertise and enthusiasm.

You can donate time or dollars to fulfill your family's annual commitment of 40 volunteer hours. Log your hours on our website or in the office. Direct volunteering questions to Mishawn Nelson: mnelson@lcmcs.org.

Family means nobody gets left behind. Sometimes the children in our lives scream for help rather than ask, and everybody's blood pressure goes up. Often labeled as 'poorly behaved' or just 'bad', these kids are given the message that the adults around them would much rather wash their hands of them than figure them out. The people at Lives in the Balance ask us to try another way -- one of collaboration and empathy.
